Director, Reading

THE SCHOOL DISTRICT OF PHILADELPHIA
The Director of Reading role requires particular expertise in the area of reading and reading instruction. He/She coordinates and reviews remediation plans designed to provide comprehensive reading instruction in designated schools for select students.  The primary function is to manage the work of the Reading Specialists.

Essential Functions
  • Provides leadership in the area of reading, including the effective implementation of instructional strategies to promote student achievement.
  • Monitors programmatic activities and reading specialists to ensure effective implementation.
  • Oversees and directs the activities of Reading Specialists; coordinates the planning and implementation of reading programs and initiatives; supports the development of plans that address continuous student improvement in response to student data.
  • Oversees and reviews school and student reading data
  • Plans and coordinates meetings and professional development for Reading Specialists.
  • Works collaboratively with internal departments, institutions of higher education and other external organizations and agencies.
  • Conducts school visits to monitor the work of the Reading Specialists.
  • Attends community and professional meetings as appropriate to support curriculum development.
 
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Demonstrated knowledge of:
  • the principles, practices and methods of education in Reading.
  • reading pedagogical modalities.
  • research related to reading.
  • the principles of educational administration.
  • supervisory methods and techniques.
Demonstrated ability to:
  • apply research to practical situations.
  • plan and administer strategies for effective system wide staff development.
  • communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • establish and maintain effective working relationships.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Master’s degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Seven years of full-time, paid, professional experience in education, three of which have been in an administrative or supervisory capacity and have involved implementing instructional strategies.
Certificates/Licenses
  • Valid Commonwealth of Pennsylvania certificate for K-12 or Elementary and Secondary Principal.
                                                                                  OR
  • Valid Commonwealth of Pennsylvania certificate to Supervise Reading.

Selection Process
Interviews may be conducted to determine how well a candidate meets the established criteria.  Note that not all qualified candidates may be selected for an interview. The selected candidate must have no anecdotal record on file and have not been subject to any disciplinary action within the past eighteen (18) months, and have an excellent record of attendance and punctuality during the last three (3) years (defined as no more than eighteen (18) occasions of lateness or absence for personal illness in the last three years (3) years with the exception of one extended long-term absence).
