Job Description

Title: Food Service Worker I                      

Department: Food Service

Reports To: Cafeteria Manager or Food Service Worker III


Job Summary

This is food services work assisting in the preparation and service of food within the School District of Philadelphia facilities. Employees in this class are responsible for assembling sandwiches, preparing salads and desserts, and serving food. Work involves cleaning food preparation and/or service areas, and maintaining an accurate count of items produced and sold. Work may additionally involve grilling food, slicing meats, and/or cashiering in a cafeteria.

The food service worker operates a compliant Point of Service (POS) and POS computer system/terminal.  Work is performed under the general direction of a Food Services Manager or Food Services Worker III.

            

TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK (Illustrative Only)

  • Assembles sandwiches, chops vegetables; prepares salads and fruit dishes; portions prepared desserts into serving containers
  •  Portions and services food to children and adults in a cafeteria;  May place packaged lunches on wire racks
  • Counts the number of items prepared and sold; enters figures in a log; may receive money and make change
  • Operates a compliant POS Computer System and Terminal
  • Washes pots, pans, trays and other utensils; cleans preparation and/or service areas
  • May sweep and/or mop floor of food service area.  May remove trash from kitchen and cafeteria
  •  May prepare foods on a grill including but not limited to hamburgers and hot dogs; may slice meats; may bake simple desserts, may use a fryalator
  • Performs related work as required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of basic food preparation techniques.
  • Knowledge of the health and sanitation aspects of food handling and preparation.
  •  Ability to learn to use and care for equipment used in food preparation and service.
  •  Ability to perform simple mathematical calculations.
  •  Ability to maintain personal cleanliness.
  • Ability to read, write and count accurately.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, associates, students and staff.
  • Operate Compliant Point of Service and Point of Service Computer Terminal and/or roster.


Minimum Requirements   

 

  • High School diploma or equivalent (GED) is required. The Executive Director of Personnel may determine the equivalency to include training, education and practical experience including attendance at trade and vocational schools.

  • One year full-time, paid food service experience.
