Primary Role and Purpose:

Provide with health services to students; promote health education and preventive health practices. The role is to enhance the education process by maximizing the health and well-being of school age children and adolescents.  The school nurse works with the Administrative staff and parents to ensure that each child is in the best possible physical and emotional health to benefit from school.

Qualifications:

•         Current Registered Nurse licensed to practice professional nursing in Texas from the State Board of Nursing
•        Certified by Texas Department of Health to conduct vision and hearing screening
•        CPR Certified

 Education:

·        Graduate of an accredited professional nursing education program

Skills:

•       Knowledge of health appraisal to identify students with health defects
•         Strong organizational, communication and interpersonal skills
•        Ability to implement policies and procedures

Experience:

·        Minimum of 3-year experience preferred in a community health environment and/or school setting

Responsibilities and Duties:

• Provide direct care utilizing professional assessment skills, the nursing process, and established school health protocols
• Serve as a health advocate for students
• Notify parents of accident or illness and secure medical care for students in emergency cases (if parents or emergency contact cannot be reached)
• Coordinate management system to administer medications to students at the school
• Administer medications according to district policy and procedures
• Establish and implement effective procedures for mandatory screening programs
• Make referrals as necessary
• Participate in the development of campus health education curriculum and provide health education to individuals and groups
• Educate faculty and staff as needed on health-related topics

Student Management:

·        Serve as health liaison between school, physicians, parents and community

·        Assess student problems and make appropriate referrals working with students, teachers, parents and medical and healthcare professionals as needed

·        Collaborate with other professionals regarding the implementation of health-related Individual Education Plan (EIP) items

·        Participate in the assessment and reporting of suspected child abuse

·        Communicate regularly with the principal, school counselor, teachers parents, food services and other staff regarding health services issues

·        Assist with Admission, Review, and Dismissal Committee, crisis team, and school committees

 Growth and Development

·        Help students assess and enhance their study methods and habits

·        Produce formal and informal testing to evaluate student success

·        Coordinate and manage extracurricular duties as assigned. Sponsor outside activities approved by the school principal

·        Serve as an example for students, support the mission of Charter.

Professional

·        Enrich job skills through professional development activities

Other

·        Keep up-to-date on and abide by state and charter regulations and policies for classroom teachers

·        Gather, manage and file all reports, records and other documents required

·        Be active in the faculty meetings and assist in staff committees as necessary

Supervisory Responsibilities:

·        Oversee assigned nurse’s aide if applicable

Additional Job-Related Duties:

·        Maintain control in stressful situations

·        Extended hours may be required

·        Some lifting may be required

·        Member of at least one campus/district level committee
