Job Description

Primary Role and Purpose:

Provide with health services to students; promote health education and preventive health practices. The role is to enhance the education process by maximizing the health and well-being of school age children and adolescents.  The school nurse works with the Administrative staff and parents to ensure that each child is in the best possible physical and emotional health to benefit from school.



·        Valid registered nurse licensed to practice professional nursing in Texas from the State Board of Nursing

·        Certified by Texas Department of Health to conduct vision and hearing screening

·        CPR Certification



·        Graduate of an accredited professional nursing education program



·        Knowledge of health appraisal to identify students with health defects

·        Strong organizational, communication and interpersonal skills

·        Ability to implement policies and procedures



·        Minimum of 3 year experience preferred in a community health environment and/or school setting


Responsibilities and Duties:


Student Management:

·        Serve as health liaison between school, physicians, parents and community

·        Assess student problems and make appropriate referrals working with students, teachers, parents and medical and health care professionals as needed

·        Collaborate with other professionals regarding implementation of health-related Individual Education Plan (EIP) items

·        Participate in assessment and reporting of suspected child abuse

·        Communicate regularly with principal, school counselor, teachers parents, food services and other staff regarding health services issues

·        Assist with Admission, Review, and Dismissal Committee, crisis team and school committees


Growth and Development

·        Help students assess and enhance their study methods and habits

·        Produce formal and informal testing to evaluate student success

·        Coordinate and manage extracurricular duties as assigned. Sponsor outside activities approved by the school principal

·        Serve as an example for students, support mission of Charter



·        Enrich job skills through professional development activities



·        Keep up-to-date on and abide by state and charter regulations and policies for classroom teachers

·        Gather, manage and file all reports, records and other documents required

·        Be active in faculty meeting and assist in staff committees as necessary


Supervisory Responsibilities:

·        Oversee assigned nurse’s aide if applicable


Additional Job Related Duties:

·        Maintain control in stressful situations

·        Extended hours may be required

·        Some lifting may be required

·        Member of at least one campus/district level committee

Attend Parent and Teacher Organization (PTO) and Board meetings as a grade level represented – as directed 
Additional Information
School - setting experience will the same as teacher salary scale

Up to 10yrs of non-school setting experience - $51,800.00
