Position
Goal:
The Director of
Secondary Education assists the district with realizing the vision of students of the Marysville School
District are prepared for further education, technology, economic change and

While many factors outside of our direct control
affect student learning, the district’s ability to support
high-quality teaching in every classroom is essential. Along with the
teacher, principals play a primary role in improvement of learning at
scale. MSD is focused on improving how it supports principals and the schools
they lead. The Director of Secondary Schools is focused on supporting district
and school improvement efforts (district’s strategic plan) through
building the capacity of principals using the AWSP Leadership Framework to
guide the work.
This position will work closely with the
Director of Elementary Schools and Executive Director of Schools to align
practices, processes and procedures that will build principal capacity
through providing urgency, support and differentiation based on needs of the
individual principal as well as school. The focus will be developing a culture
of support and continuous improvement for principals and the schools they lead.
Performance in this position will be measured through growth in principal
performance and progress towards school improvement goals.

Primary Performance Duties and Responsibilities Instructional
Leadership:
This central office position is designed to be a
master teacher of principals, helping them increase their instructional
leadership capacity as a means of supporting and improving teaching and
learning in each school. The Director of Secondary Schools will spend the
majority of her or his time on this responsibility.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Valid Washington
State Administrator’s certificate with Principal or Program Administrator
endorsements
- Degree in
educational administration, public administration or related field
- 3-5 years of
successful experience as a middle and/or high school principal position in
diverse settings or comparable experience, demonstrating the candidate’s own
growth as an instructional leader
- Demonstrated ability
to coach adults to build their capacity and show instructional growth as a
result
- Demonstrated ability
to know and apply instructional practice and strategies that enhance student
achievement
- Washington State driver’s
license or evidence of mobility

Skills:
- Demonstrated
success as a principal in middle and/or high school resulting in improved
achievement
- Demonstrated
excellence as a teacher of adults, professional developer, instructional coach
or curriculum director
- Demonstrated skills
in planning and organizing professional development with strategies used in the

- Instructional Leadership:
- Work one-on-one with
principals as partners to grow their instructional leadership capacity
through differentiated support as aligned to the Leadership Framework
- Develop principal
professional learning communities focused on principals’ growth as
instructional leaders
- Provide and broker
professional development for principals based on individual and group learning
needs
- Model effective
practices as one means of building principal capacity. Provide transparent,
meaningful and on-going feedback to principals through frequent formal and
informal structures
- Ensure principals
understand their data and how to use it to improve practice, strategies and
results
- Collaborate with
ILED colleagues to share ideas and provide coherent support to principals
- Articulate a vision
for high quality instruction and use this definition as a lens through which to
gauge practice
- Evaluate principals
using the AWSP Leadership Framework
- Provide
recommendations for principal and assistant principal hires to the
superintendent
- Additional Roles that Support Schools:
- Assist Principals to
build capacity of their Assistant Principals to prepare them to become
instructional leaders based on the AWSP Leadership Framework
- Develop tools,
processes and systems to assist principals in school-wide efforts
- Support or assist
schools in implementing curriculum, assessment, intervening and acceleration
strategies
- Assist principals in
identifying student learning/achievement goals that align to school need and
district vision, including their SIP (School Improvement Plan) and Indistar/State
Improvement Plan
- Assist principals
with interpreting relevant federal and state laws as they relate to school
issues
- Assist principals in
staffing, scheduling and budgeting as needed
- Support principals in connecting with other
Central Office departments to respond to operational and other needs
- System-wide and Team Roles:
- Work with the
Executive Director of Schools and other system leaders to implement the
district’s strategic plan, its intent and metrics
- Collaborate with
other members of the District Leadership Team to support the improvement of
instruction at all schools and implement sound strategies across content
and programs
- Provide
recommendations and support the implementation of major instructional and
educational strategies, including partnering with evaluating their
effectiveness
- Work
collaboratively with the colleagues in aligning critical components of the
work and creating common messages across the system
- Assist in the
interpretation of district policies, rules and regulations and make
recommendations regarding their formulation or modification
- On occasion, perform
such other related duties and assume such other related responsibilities as may
be assigned
- Maintain
consistent attendance and conform to regular work hours specified under
contract
- Comply with all district policies and procedures
- Comply with the Code of Professional
Conduct
- Perform
related duties as assigned
