SUMMARY: Perform journeymen level electrical skills relating to the maintenance, repair, installation, troubleshooting, and preventative/planned maintenance of electrical systems and fire/security alarm systems. Perform minor maintenance duties in secondary trades. Maintain a safe, comfortable, and secure learning environment for students, staff, and the public.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Perform journeyman level skilled functions in the evaluation, analysis, and correction of problems with electrical distribution (600v or less), fire/security alarm control systems, and equipment.
Coordinate and implement design and layout associated with the installation of new electrical distribution (600v or less), fire/security alarm control systems, and equipment.
Inspect and perform planned and preventative maintenance on electrical distribution (600v or less), fire/security alarm control systems, and equipment.
Complete/maintain required forms/records including time/attendance, service orders, and work orders.
Assist group leader in planning, estimating, ordering of material, and quality control.
Instruct other trades persons as assigned.
Provide technical expertise and assistance in interpreting specification and comprehending manuals, diagrams, blueprints, and schematics.
Respond to emergencies after normal working hours.
Assist with intra- and interdepartmental project planning as assigned.
Assist in minor maintenance activities utilizing secondary skills, as required.
Attend training classes to maintain or increase level of training and professional expertise.
Perform other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND TRAINING: High school diploma plus post secondary courses in business or vocational school equivalent to up to one year of college.
EXPERIENCE: 6 years experience in journey level institutional, commercial, or industrial maintenance, including 4 years service truck experience, and experience in secondary trades related to facility maintenance.
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, & EQUIPMENT: Journey level skill in the electrical trade. Working knowledge of applicable regulatory requirements, trade standards, electrical distribution systems, fire and security alarm systems and low voltage controls. Operating knowledge of fault locating equipment, multimeters, and computer. Must provide own hand tools to accomplish position requirements. Operating knowledge of lap top computers preferred at hire.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, & REGISTRATIONS: Valid Colorado driver's license and Journeyman Electrical License from the State of Colorado. SUPERVISION/TECHNICAL RESPONSIBILITY: This job has no supervisory responsibilities. Provides technical expertise and assistance across the District, including work team, school building staff, and project design/construction staff.
CONTACTS: Daily contact with persons in same work unit/building for routine internal matters, and with persons outside department/building to provide a service. Weekly contact with vendors/suppliers to furnish/obtain information, and with project managers, engineers, and contractors to resolve problems and negotiate matters.
SAFETY TO SELF AND OTHERS: High exposure to self to bruises/cuts due to equipment/materials, heat burns due to contact with steam/hot water/electricity, and fractured bones due to falling from ladders. Medium exposure to self to hernia due to lifting equipment, to repetitive motion injuries due to use of hand tools, loss of limb due to working with machinery, loss of sight due to power tools, and fatality due to falling. Low exposure to self to disease due to exposure to asbestos and disfigurement due to power tools. Also, duties of this job may impact the safety of others if precautions are not taken when working where others are present and if work is done poorly and does not meet required specifications or codes for safety.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and reach with hands and arms. The employee frequently is required to climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to sit and taste or smell. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts and risk of electrical shock. The employee is frequently exposed to outside weather conditions, extreme cold, and extreme heat. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
MENTAL FUNCTIONS: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to analyze and evaluate. Frequently required to compare, communicate, use interpersonal skills, and compile. Occasionally required to copy, coordinate, instruct, compute, synthesize, and negotiate.
JUDGMENT AND DECISION MAKING: Work is assigned by group leader. This position requires application of technical knowledge to evaluate, analyze, repair, or replace equipment, determine cost effectiveness, prioritize repairs, and determine impact decisions have on building occupants. Work is guided by District policies, District Technical Specifications, National Electrical Code, National Fire Protection Association Standards, and Colorado State Electrical Board. Decision making requires collaboration with other electrical technicians, group leaders, Building Engineers, school staff, Supervisors, Construction Management personnel, Facilities Planning and Design personnel, and design consultants. Errors in decision making could lead to uncomfortable, unsafe, and unhealthy learning environments; increased energy costs; serious injury or fatality; and liability issues. Supervisor is involved only in major decisions.
DIVERSITY OF DUTIES: Duties require cross-training in fire and security alarm systems, low voltage controls, and electronics. Must be cross-trained and have experience in a minimum of two secondary trades outside of the electrical field. Duties and actions impact individuals across the District.
