Job Description

Essential Functions:

Teach courses in mathematics AND science to secondary students.

Utilize District curriculum that reflects the diverse educational, cultural, and linguistic backgrounds of the students served in accordance with the Common Core Standards and graduation requirements.

Prepare effective lessons and conducts teaching and instructional activities, utilizing educational technology, materials, and other learning aids.

Reviews, analyzes and evaluates student data to adapt and design instruction.

Individualizes and adapts educational processes and procedures to enhance student educational

opportunities.

Provides group and individual instruction to motivate students, and effectively utilizes the time available for instructional activities.

Establishes appropriate standards of student behavior, using behavioral management strategies and

techniques.

Create a positive student learning environment. 

Work collaboratively with content teams to help develop formative and summative assessments, design projects, and assignments according to the syllabus, etc. to be shared with other members of the department.

Collaborate with other school based and district teams to aide in student learning and achievement goals.

Establishes communication with parents

Teacher must hold Colorado Teaching License and be Highly Qualified in Math through an Endorsement,  the PLACE or PRAXIS II content exam or meet a 24 semester credit review.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Mathematics and Science

The Open School is seeking teachers who are passionate about student-directed learning and committed to students’ personal and social education as well as intellectual.  Those who view the world as the classroom and see themselves facilitating learning outside as well as inside the school walls are encouraged to apply.

Required licensing and certification:

Must possess current Colorado license with an endorsement in mathematics and science. 

Qualifications:

1.       Demonstrate competence in the advisement of students individually and in groups in the personal, intellectual and social domains. 

2.       Preference will be given to candidate with additional science endorsement, and ability to teach science at the secondary level.

3.       Must have knowledge of, training in, and ability to teach the content area of mathematics at the secondary level.

4.       Ability to provide effective instruction at the secondary level, this may include algebra, geometry, calculus, earth and/or life science.

5.       Must have a developmental understanding of and experience working with students at the secondary level using effective teaching-learning techniques.

6.       Strong motivation and skills necessary to effectively instruct through use of hands-on and experiential techniques.

7.       Demonstrate competence in designing and leading extended interdisciplinary field experience for students, utilizing learning opportunities outside the classroom. 

8.       Experience with open/alternative education.

Performance Responsibilities

Advisor:

1.       Counsel and advise early secondary students as a group and as individuals and create individual educational plans for those students.

2.       Communicate with parents, students and teachers concerning student progress in the secondary program.

3.       Assist students with the portfolio process of assessment and self-evaluation.

4.       Work with other teachers and students in the secondary program to develop consistent expectations and limits for students. 

5.       Advise students through the self-directed learning process at the Open School.

6.       Work comfortably with an advising group by providing an energetic and stimulating environment. 

Staff Member:

1.       Participate in a self-evaluation process and interact with other staff members to assist in their own evaluations. 

2.       Participate in school improvement processes including work with the Jefferson County Public School District and state accreditation processes, in addition to actively participating on a variety of school-wide committees.

3.       Communicate effectively with students, staff, and parents.

4.       Work with all staff members in an enthusiastic, positive and flexible manner.

5.       Work with special education students in an inclusive environment.

Teacher:

1.       Teach and/or coordinate multiple secondary classes in math and science.

2.       Work with the other math and science teachers to develop continuity and scaffolding within the appropriate curricula.

3.       Utilize performance assessments and embrace experiential learning in the classroom and community; facilitate curriculum “outside” the classroom. 

4.       Be enthusiastic and able to engage a diverse group of learners.
