SUMMARY: Repair and maintain all District vehicles and equipment in a safe and effective manner. Analyze and/or diagnose problems and determine corrective measures using the full range of mechanics tools and equipment available to properly complete the repair. Due to the safety critical nature of vehicle maintenance all work must be done in a professional and conscientious manner. Body work is done on school buses of all sizes, Class 8 trucks down to Class 1, various types of medium-duty-equipment, all types of light-duty vehicles and equipment.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Make minor repairs to buses and utility vehicles to include part replacement, light suspension, glass, lighting, doors, etc.
Repair/replacement of upper body panels and under frame structures; to include proper body techniques of panel repair, welding, plastic fillers and panel mending components. Use of shop equipment to measure, realign, and repair vehicles/equipment to retain structural integrity.
Repair mechanical system affected by accident damage to include electrical, heating, cooling, minor engine system and other mechanical systems
Welding of panels, components and to repair parts using plasma cutter and MIG welding from 20 gauge to 1/2+ inch metals. Use of and oxy-acetylene torch techniques for heating and shrinking various metals.
Painting and color matching to include proper mixing, prepping for base coat/clear coat and acrylic applications. Properly use epoxy primers, sealers and single stage applications.
Fiberglass damage repair to include patching, mixing, and blending the repair, must maintain proper strength and thicknesses.
Repair suspension systems to include frame damage, spring and shackle replacement, front end work, and part replacement.
Fabrication of various components and parts using needed tools and materials.
Truck tire work to include mounting and dismounting from wheel, patching and repairing, inventory and loading.
Other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND TRAINING: High school diploma/GED required. Automotive body shop school/experience required.
EXPERIENCE: Three years experience on light to medium duty vehicles.
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, & EQUIPMENT: Working knowledge of all vehicle/equipment systems and components. Knowledge of applicable laws and regulations pertaining to the repair and operation of vehicles. Strong knowledge of welding equipment. The following are preferred at hire, but not required: operating knowledge of fleet maintenance system, and heavy equipment. Must have complete set of mechanic's hand tools and tool chest.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, & REGISTRATIONS: The following must be acquired within six months after hire: Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
SUPERVISION/TECHNICAL RESPONSIBILITY: This job has no supervisory responsibilities. Acts as a technical resource for drivers/operators and office personnel throughout the District regarding the operation and maintenance of vehicles and equipment
CONTACTS: Daily contact with persons within work unit/building for routine internal matters, and with persons outside department/building to provide a service. Weekly contact with vendors to furnish/obtain information.
SAFETY TO SELF AND OTHERS: High exposure to bruises due to tools/equipment, cuts due to metal edges and glass, chemical burns due to battery acid, heat burns due to hot engines and welding, hernia due to lifting and pushing heavy objects, and repetitive motion due to tool use. High exposure to loss of sight due to impact injuries. Low exposure to fractured bones due to slips, disfigurement due to tools and equipment, and fatality due to equipment failure and road calls.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; and toxic or caustic chemicals. The employee is frequently exposed to outside weather conditions, extreme heat, and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to risk of electrical shock and explosives. The noise level in the work environment is often very loud.
MENTAL FUNCTIONS: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to analyze, communicate, coordinate, evaluate, and use interpersonal skills. The employee is frequently required to compare and compile. The employee is occasionally required to copy, instruct, compute, synthesize, and negotiate.
JUDGMENT AND DECISION MAKING: Work is assigned by Shop Foreman. This position requires application of technical knowledge to examine a repair and determine most efficient and cost effective repair procedure, including determining the tools and equipment to use, best source for parts, vendors to utilize for component repairs, and time required to complete work. An error in decision making could lead to accidents, equipment failure, or driver write-up, resulting in injury, delays, or fatalities. Decision making requires collaboration with other mechanics, Fleet Manager, Shop Foreman, and Service Specialists. Supervisor/manager is involved only in major decisions. Work is guided by shop procedures and state and federal laws regarding the operation of vehicles and equipment.
DIVERSITY OF DUTIES: Duties require cross-training in electrical, metal fabrication, plumbing, drafting, engineering, carpentry, upholstery, machinery, welding, and building maintenance. Duties and actions impact individuals across several departments.
