We believe great substitute teachers deserve recognition and ways to advance into a career in education. Syracuse substitute teachers earn $130-$150 per day, depending on location (see "Compensation" below). Many of our substitutes continue to grow and develop in becoming certified teachers that are hired in Syracuse City Schools. Those certified in teaching will be considered for long-term substitute positions.

Job Overview
Substitute Teachers lead instruction in assigned classrooms in the absence of regular classroom teachers. Substitute Teachers are responsible for helping students build knowledge and skills according to teacher-planned lessons. Once hired, Substitute Teachers accept day-to-day assignments across all 33 SCSD schools and 4 programs.

Specific Duties
Reporting to the Principal and acting as the teacher for the day, the Substitute Teacher must, at a minimum:
  • Work a total of either 7 hours or 8 hours and 15 minutes per day, depending on the assigned school (see below)
  • Report to the school office at beginning of school day to pick up required materials/schedule of classes and at the end of the school day to return materials
  • Lead lessons as prescribed in the plans left by the classroom teacher
  • Create a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and grade-level appropriate
  • Guide the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals and objectives as indicated in plans
  • Employ instructional methods and materials that are most appropriate for meeting lesson objectives
  • Maintain a neat and orderly classroom
  • Perform non-classroom duties usually required of the absent teacher (lunchroom duty, hall monitoring, etc.)
  • Follow all school and classroom procedures
  • Perform other related duties as directed by Principal or Vice Principal

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
  • Interest in serving Syracuse City students in various schools and programs
  • Ability to accept daily assignments in various SCSD schools and programs

Compensation/Benefits
The following schools have an 8-hour, 15-minute work day and pay $150 per day.

  • Dr. King Elementary School
  • Dr. Weeks Elementary School
  • Franklin Elementary School
  • Frazer K-8 School
  • HW Smith K-8 School
  • Lincoln Middle School
  • Porter Elementary School
  • Seymour Dual Language Academy
  • Van Duyn Elementary School
  • Westside Academy @ Blodgett
All other schools have a 7-hour work day and pay $130 per day.

Qualification for SCSD benefits after 3 months, if you work every day
