Job Description

Job Summary

Coordinates and oversees professional language access services that are being provided to all the schools and administrative offices of the School District of Philadelphia by the Office of Parent, Family and Community Services. Coordinates the work of the District's translation team, develops and conducts training and provides translation services at public outreach events as needed. Strengthens District ties with bilingual and non-English speaking families as well as community organizations. Participates in the delivery of language access services to various cultural and linguistic communities represented among the District's student population including maintaining web-pages in target languages.

Essential Functions

·  Coordinates and oversees the work of District's translations team; ensures that work is performed in an efficient and effective manner.

·  Provides assistance and support to administrative and regional offices as well as schools to facilitate language access for bilingual and non-English speaking families; ensures that the appropriate services have been provided to the major linguistic communities

·  Provides interpretation and translation services for District offices and families; participates

in the interpretation, translation and proofreading of key publications and announcements

which are utilized for the District's hotline, cable television and general communication.

·  Maintains web pages for District's Translation Services and pages in target languages for

the District's parents, students and community at large.

·  Plans and conducts training and develops training materials on the use of translation &

interpretation services, cross-cultural communication, cultural awareness and related topics for District staff and bilingual and non-English speaking families.

·  Networks and maintains contact with community-based organizations representing diverse

populations; utilizes contacts to increase family involvement in collaboration with other

District offices; participates in community meetings and activities.

·  Acts as a cultural broker to enhance parent involvement, school climate and safety, and

cross-cultural problem solving; assists with establishing advisory committees which

support the work of the office.

·  Assists with writing grant proposals; seeks various funding sources to enhance language

access services and cross cultural communications training.

·  Assists with conflict resolution and crisis intervention in community situations and acts

with diplomacy and good judgment.


Spanish Language Proficiency is Required for this position


 
Additional Information

Minimum Requirements

·  Master's degree program from an accredited college or university majoring in

translation, multicultural studies, communications or a related area.

·  Three years of full-time, paid, professional experience which has included translation and

interpretation, oversight of language access services, parent and community outreach and developing and conducting training.
