Title:                    Speech Therapists, Teacher of the Hearing Impaired and Teacher of the Vision Impaired

Job Summary for Speech Therapists
 
The Teacher of Speech/Language Impaired provides comprehensive educational, diagnostic, and therapeutic services to students with speech and language defects. The Teacher attempts to enhance the student's academic abilities by using a variety of techniques and/or therapeutic intervention strategies; diagnoses students with speech/language problems such as delayed speech and language, stuttering, voice disorders, and functional and organic articulation disorders, and provides appropriate therapy for those students; participates in the multi-disciplinary team process of student evaluation; develops individual education plans; counsels families of students with speech/language impairments; participates in parent education programs; and performs related work as required.

Each applicant must:

1. Present a Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Instructional Certificate in either Speech Correction, Speech and Language Impaired, Speech and Hearing Disorders or Speech Correctionist,

or

2. Present a Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Intern Certificate in either Speech Correction, Speech and Language Impaired, Speech and Hearing Disorders or Speech Correctionist,

or

3. Present a current instructional certificate in either Speech Correction, Speech and Language Impaired, Speech and Hearing Disorders or Speech Correctionist from a state other than Pennsylvania.                                             AND

4.  Masters degree in Speech, Language Correction.

2.  A letter of enrollment for a Masters degree in Speech Pathology. 


Job Summary for Teacher of the Hearing Impaired

Teaches elementary and secondary school subjects to hearing impaired pupils with profound to moderate loss in acuity and perception. Instructs auditory perception, language, speech and lip reading. Performs in conjunction with the services of medical, instructional, administrative and other professional personnel.

Essential Functions

  • Orients procedures on the basis of pupil’s personal history and medical data; establish standards and goals for classroom work according to pupil’s needs, physical limitations, mental status and personality characteristics; adapt curriculum to meet the special needs of each child.
  • Plans units of work including content, process and sequence of study; instructs in elementary and secondary subjects; heightens auditory perception; develops receptive and expressive oral language; develops skill in lip reading; trains in the use of special materials and devices including hearing aids, etc.
  • Counsels parents and children in order to alleviate emotional and social pressures; provides information regarding the type and variety of agencies providing services to the deaf and hard of hearing; participates in structured parent education procedures.
  • Keep abreast and in service sessions to discuss individual and organizational needs as well as teaching methods.
  • Participates in team teaching, curriculum committees and/or other academic and extra-curricular activities.
  • Maintains attendance, grade and other required records.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Demonstrated knowledge of:

  • the theory and principles of normal child growth and development, with emphasis on the effects of hearing handicaps on the psychological development of the child.
  • the modern methods, principles and practices of elementary and/ or secondary education.
  • the special needs and methods of teaching deaf and hard of hearing children.
  • the anatomy of the ear and affecting diseases.
  • the materials, equipment and devices available to hearing impaired children and techniques for teaching their use.
  • the theory, principles and practices of language development, auditory training, lip reading and speech training.

Demonstrated ability to:

  • use and understand signed English.
  • instruct children to adapt to and make use of their environment through all available sensory channels.
  • prepare, plan, and teach lessons.
  • establish and maintain effective working relationships.
Each applicant must:

2. present a Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Intern Certificate in special education to teach the deaf, hard of hearing and hearing impaired,

Job Summary for Teacher of the Vision Impaired

The Teacher of the Visually Impaired works with visually impaired children at all grade levels in a variety of settings and employs the special techniques, equipment, and materials relevant to this special education group. It is necessary that the teacher has knowledge of the eye conditions found in such children; knowledge of the adaptations needed for these children; and the ability to read and write Braille. The Teacher of the Visually Impaired prepares Individualized Education
Programs and performs related work as required.

Each applicant must:

1a. Present a Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Instructional Certificate teach the Visually Impaired,

or

b. Present a Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Intern Certificate to teach the Visually Impaired,

or

c. Present a current instructional certificate to teach the Visually Impaired from a state other than Pennsylvania. If you are not certified in Pennsylvania, you should immediately contact the Bureau of Teacher Preparation and Certification to begin the evaluation process at: 333 Market Street, Harrisburg, PA 17126-0333, or by phone at: 717-787-3356.

and

2. Have a knowledge of Contracted Braille with an 80% profiency.  The interview process will require you to transcribe a short passage using a manual (nonelectric) braillewriter.
